Sublime – that is the first word that comes to mind when we think of the food we ate at Menami, a small Japanese restaurant in North York (5456 Yonge Street) that specializes is fresh, hand-made udon noodles and sake.
The dishes they serve are both traditional and inventive with great depths of flavour and a whole lotta umami. We started our meal with yam salad (spring mix, with roasted yams and other more traditional salad items, served with a tangy dressing) and albacore tuna tataki. Definitely not the best tuna tataki we’ve had, but the fact that it was served with an abundance of seemingly different types of fresh seaweed, made up for the lack luster tuna. The stand out starter for us, however, was the fresh fried eggplant. The asian eggplant comes bathed in a rich, thick sauce, showered with tiny shards of deep fried yam. It is definitely something to behold and taste. We also had the vegetable and mushroom udon and the braised short rib pot. The braised short rib was particularly delicious. Generous, meat beef short ribs were served in a thick broth, rich with interesting additions such as walnuts and goji berries, and the meat fell of the bone.
We look forward to our next trip to Menami.
