Afghanistan is the first member state, alphabetically, of the United Nations. Although Toronto is listed as the 8th largest population of the Afghan diaspora or Afghan immigrants, there is plethora of Afghani restaurants to choose from in the GTA. We choose from a blogTO list of the best Afghan restaurants in Toronto.
Kandahar Kabob

We choose to visit Kandahar Kabob, mostly because of its location and the pictures on the blogTO website. The restaurant is exactly as pictured, it’s bustling restaurant with a sort of fancy decor that is kind of incongruous with the how the food is ordered and served. The food is ordered fast-food style from a counter and you come up an retrieve it on orange plastic trays when you number is called. What Kandahar Kabob really excels is grilling. We had grilled chicken (both in pieces and kafta – ground up, mixed with spices and wrapped around a skewer; as well as lamb and beef the same way. We also had a grilled fish, which was my favorite part of meal. It was nicely spiced , had flaky, delicate flesh and was very tasty – which to me is surprising, as from what I can tell Afghanistan is a land-locked country. The side items we could do with out. The salad while fresh came with a bland, yogurt based dressed which didn’t really add anything. We also received mounds of rice, if we remember correctly you could have had fries to. There was a spice in the rice, maybe it was cardamom, which isn’t my favorite. So we guess you could say, Afghanistan food has the potential be be a carnivores dream. I’d go back, especially in the winter when it’s to cold to fire of the bbq and we’re craving some good grilled meat.
