For China we decided to have one of our favorite types of Chinese food, Uyghur. The Uyghurs are a Muslim ethnic minority group who largely live in the north-west corner of China adjacent to the countries of Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan where the dominant religion is Islam. Typical Uyghur food includes lamb served in a variety of ways, including kebabs, and a distinctive hand-pulled fresh noodle, called laghman, which is usually slathered a rich and spicy sauce. What differentiates Uyghur from different types of Chinese food is the liberal use of tomatoes, cumin and other spices not typically associated with Chinese food.

We visited Urumchi Ozgu Uyghur Restaurant located at 1-1133 Dundas St. E in Mississauga. It is a small humble restaurant that we have visited before. The restaurant is not fancy, but the food is delicious. The staff have always been very hospitable and interested in how we even knew about Uyghur food and the plight of their people.
We encourage you to give Uyghur food a try, we don’t think you will be disappointed.
